The 76th Conference of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions was held in Toledo in the first week of September. The event was hosted by the University of Castile-La Mancha, the Junta of Communities of Castilla‐La Mancha, the Cortes of Castile-La Mancha and the Toledo City Council. At the end of May, the conference of the Czech Demographic Society took place at the Olomouc City Hall. This event is a regular meeting of demographers from Czechia and Slovakia. Some of the key topics were current demographic trends, changes that the contemporary Czech family is undergoing, and working with data and databases. In the poster session, mainly Ph.D. students presented their research.
The 49th Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association took place on 16–19 November 2023. The organisers chose the hotel Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill as the venue of the conference and enabled the participants to spend some time near the heart of American democracy. At the time of the 140th anniversary of the death of the first mayor of the Benešov district, Karel Drahotín Villani, the conference Between Municipality and State opened the topic of district governments. Historians and archivists explored district self-government in relation to public administration, tracing its development and composition from its origins to the mid-20th century. A number of papers dealt with prominent figures in county councils.
The 75th conference of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions took place in Rome and Naples from 25 to 28 September 2023. The first two conference days were organised under the auspices of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament in Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome.
At the end of summer, the 5th Conference of the Society of Historical Demography took place in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. It was attended by 227 experts from 34 countries. The papers were very diverse, covering traditional topics such as fertility, nuptiality and mortality, but also new research challenges arising from the use of state-of-the-art technology. ...
