The 49th Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association took place on 16–19 November 2023. The organisers chose the hotel Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill as the venue of the conference and enabled the participants to spend some time near the heart of American democracy. At the time of the 140th anniversary of the death of the first mayor of the Benešov district, Karel Drahotín Villani, the conference Between Municipality and State opened the topic of district governments. Historians and archivists explored district self-government in relation to public administration, tracing its development and composition from its origins to the mid-20th century. A number of papers dealt with prominent figures in county councils.

The 75th conference of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions took place in Rome and Naples from 25 to 28 September 2023. The first two conference days were organised under the auspices of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament in Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome.

At the end of summer, the 5th Conference of the Society of Historical Demography took place in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. It was attended by 227 experts from 34 countries. The papers were very diverse, covering traditional topics such as fertility, nuptiality and mortality, but also new research challenges arising from the use of state-of-the-art technology. ...

At the beginning of the summer, a conference was held in Cluj-Napoca, organised by the Association for the Study of Nationalities, Babeș-Bolyai University and the Romanian Institute for Research on National Minorities. Although the presentations focused mainly on contemporary nationalism and populism, several panels were also devoted to historical background. ...

One of the events that could take place after the long covid break was the European Social Science History Conference. This time the organisers from the International Institute of Social History chose the Swedish port of Gothenburg as the venue. The programme of the four-day conference was traditionally busy, with over 20 parallel sessions running at some points. Members of our team organized two sessions and participated in many others.

On 22–24 November 2022, the German Historical Institute in Warsaw hosted a conference entitled Forbidden Fruit. It was devoted to sexual life and Churches in Central Eastern Europe in different epochs. The programme opened with a very interesting keynote lecture given by Klaus van Eickels, professor at the University of Bamberg in Germany. ...

In mid-November, our team members organized another successful event with international participation. The workshop Careers in politics, politics as a career. Developments in 19th and early 20th century Europe was attended by experts from eight European countries, Israel, and the USA. The meeting took place at the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the CAS in Prague.

On 12–13 October 2022, the 35th year of the traditional symposium was held in Mikulov. The theme of this conference was women in the history of Moravia. The papers dealt with the lives of specific women, their activities in associations, educational institutions and in public sphere in general. Attention was also paid to the possibilities of studying women in memory institutions in Moravia and Bohemia. ...

The first book published as a result of our project is out. The main topic of the volume is elites in East-Central and South-East Europe in the 19th century and their gregarious tendencies. Sixteen authors contributed altogether, including five members of our team. Judit Pál, Vlad Popovici and Oana Sorescu-Iudean wrote the foreword titled Elites and Groups in East-Central and South-East Europe in the Long Nineteenth Century. ...
