We are pleased to announce the publication of Networking and Career Strategies in Late Habsburg Monarchy and its Successor States: Paths to Power (2026), edited by Alice Velková. This comprehensive volume offers a scholarly examination of elite formation and social mobility in Central and Eastern Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The research focuses specifically on Bohemia and Transylvania, utilizing them as representative models of the Cisleithanian and Transleithanian administrative systems within the Habsburg Monarchy. By comparing these two distinct regions, the book provides a nuanced understanding of how institutional structures influenced the trajectory of personal and professional success.

At the heart of the volume there are 20 richly contextualized microhistorical case studies. These narratives illustrate the shifting roles of education, professional networks, and political upheaval—particularly the landmark transformations of 1848, 1867, 1918, and 1938—in shaping the careers of high-ranking state officials and Members of Parliament. Furthermore, the authors explore how membership in specific ethnic, religious, and social groups dictated the success of individual social mobility.

What distinguishes this work is its innovative methodological approach, which combines rigorous comparative analysis with the detailed reconstruction and visualization of relational networks. This offers unique insights into the underlying structures that supported elite status during an era of rapid social and political transition. This volume will be of significant interest to scholars, students, and readers specializing in Central European history and the mechanics of social power.
