At the beginning of the summer, a conference was held in Cluj-Napoca, organised by the Association for the Study of Nationalities, Babeș-Bolyai University and the Romanian Institute for Research on National Minorities. Although the presentations focused mainly on contemporary nationalism and populism, several panels were also devoted to historical background. The session Legal Professionals in the Late Habsburg Monarchy and the Successor States: Career and Identity Choices, Political and Civic Engagement, chaired by Sinéad Carolan and Gábor Egry, featured three members of our team. Martin Klečacký's presentation was entitled At a Crossroads. Career Paths of German Speaking Justice Officials in Bohemia after the Dissolution of Austrian Empire and Vlad Popovici and Ovidiu Emil Iudean spoke on Changing Patterns of Involvement? Romanian Lawyers in Transylvania in Politics and Civic Society, before and after the First World War. After the papers were delivered, a lively debate on the position of legal professionals in the Habsburg Monarchy and successor states took place. In addition to attending the conference, our team members also used their time together for several meetings to discuss the progress of data reconstruction and further publication outcomes.
